Credit Union Times
Runs Hall Op-Ed

Credit Union Times recently ran an op-ed piece written by W. Robert Hall entitled “Green Lending is Profitable and Smart” drawing on Hall’s research for the Filene Research Institute. Click here to read the op-ed.

A Solid Business Case

A recent Credit Union Journal article quotes Hall noting that there is a strong business case for offering green loans.  He observed that the Filene Research Institute’s  study’s findings “make it clear that there is a solid business case for credit unions to expand their focus on helping their members cope with the ever rising costs of energy to heat their homes and to get the most out of each gallon of gasoline.”

Hall Associates Consulting LLC teamed up with the Filene Research Institute to find out whether credit unions are marketing loans to help their members save money at the gas pump and on their utility bills.  And, if so, what was the outcome?  After conducting a detailed online survey and holding a series of interviews with senior credit union managers, we have the answer.

“More and more credit unions are discovering that lending for green purposes is good business in its own right.  The loans are profitable; they attract financially strong borrowers, spur membership growth, and lead to new growth in solidly performing loans on the balance sheet.”

This is true whether the lending is for hybrid or electric vehicles, improving the energy efficiency of homes, installing solar panels, or helping small businesses reduce their utility expenses.

There are a variety of partnerships some credit unions are working with to expand their lending in these areas.  There are a variety of ways the programs are being structured.  There are a variety of ways credit unions are marketing their green loans.  Different solutions work differently in different circumstances.

At Hall Associates Consulting, LLC we work with our clients to help them achieve their objectives in their own unique situations.  But it is clear that green lending provides important opportunities for credit unions to stimulate the growth of solidly performing loans that help credit union members save money.

You thought you only had to compete against banks?  Think again.

  • Your members have a growing set of new options to finance energy-saving home improvements.
  • Utility companies are offering loans that can be repaid in their monthly electric bills.
  • Some state and local governments are issuing municipal bonds to lend to homeowners installing solar systems with repayments made through new special tax assessments.
  • New revolving loan funds (RLFs) are being capitalized to lend for energy efficiency and alternative energy improvements.

At Hall Associates Consulting, LLC, we work with credit unions to solve immediate problems; but we also keep an eye on changes in the broader marketplace that will impact credit unions over the next ten years. Getting in front of, and adapting to, these changes can mean the difference between thriving or floundering.
